The problem with carrier benefits

Company coverage ends with your last paycheck.

Group life through a carrier usually stops the day you leave, and it rarely comes with living benefits or cash value. Owner-operators often have nothing in place at all. An IUL is your policy. It rides with you from carrier to carrier, into your own authority, or off the road entirely.

Living benefits

If you can't drive, the policy can still work for you.

Most policies only pay when you die. An IUL with living benefit riders may let you access a portion of your death benefit early if you're diagnosed with a qualifying illness, while you're still here to use it.

Critical illness

A diagnosis that changes everything

A qualifying critical illness may trigger early access to funds so you can cover bills, truck payments, and lost income while you recover.

Examples carriers commonly list: heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, major organ transplant.
Chronic illness

When you can't do it on your own anymore

If a chronic condition leaves you unable to perform everyday activities like bathing, dressing, or eating without help, the policy may pay out while you're living.

Typically defined as being unable to perform two or more activities of daily living, or a severe cognitive impairment.
Terminal illness

Time and money when it matters most

A terminal diagnosis may allow you to accelerate a large portion of the death benefit so you and your family can make decisions without financial pressure.

Usually applies when a physician certifies a life expectancy of 12 to 24 months, depending on the carrier.

Living benefit riders are subject to the terms of the specific policy and carrier. Availability, definitions, and payout amounts vary by carrier and state. Accelerating the death benefit reduces the amount paid to your beneficiaries.

Cash value

A policy that builds something you can actually use.

Part of what you pay into an IUL goes toward a cash value account tied to a stock market index, with a floor that protects you from losing that value in a down year. Over time, that's money you can borrow against.

  1. You fund the policy

Set a monthly amount that fits your budget. Part covers your protection, part goes to cash value.

  2. Cash value grows with a floor

Growth is credited based on an index like the S&P 500. When the index is up, you're credited up to a cap. When it's down, the floor keeps your cash value from taking the loss.

  3. You access it when you need it

Take a policy loan or withdrawal for whatever life throws at you, generally without a credit check, and when structured correctly, often without a tax bill.

What drivers use it for

  • Down payment on your own truck
  • Slow freight months and home time between loads
  • Major repairs, tires, and breakdowns
  • Kids' school, a wedding, a family emergency
  • Supplemental income later on when you're ready to slow down

Indexed universal life insurance is a life insurance product, not an investment. Cash value growth is not guaranteed and depends on the policy design, index performance, caps, fees, and how the policy is funded. Loans and withdrawals reduce the cash value and death benefit and may have tax consequences if the policy lapses.

Common questions

Straight answers.

Do owner-operators qualify?
Yes. Owner-operators and lease-purchase drivers are exactly who this was built for, because there's no employer plan to fall back on. Your breakdown is based on you, not your carrier.
I'm a company driver with benefits. Why would I need this?
Carrier group life is a good start, but it's usually a flat amount, it rarely includes living benefits or cash value, and it ends when you leave. An IUL adds coverage you own and keep, no matter where you drive next.
Do I need a medical exam?
Not to get started. Many drivers qualify for policies that use a phone interview and health questions instead of an exam. Your advisor will tell you which carriers fit your situation.
What does it cost?
It depends on your age, health, the coverage amount, and how the policy is designed. Most drivers pick a monthly amount that fits their budget and the policy is built around it. You'll see real numbers before you decide anything.
What happens if I switch carriers or go independent?
Nothing changes. The policy is in your name, billed to you, and stays in force as long as you keep it funded. It goes wherever you go.
Is this an investment?
No. An IUL is life insurance. The cash value account is a feature of the policy, and its growth is tied to an index with a floor and a cap. It's not a securities product and it's not a substitute for one.
Who will contact me?
A licensed advisor from Truckers Protection Group who works with CDL drivers will call you. Policies are set up entirely over the phone, so there's nothing to visit and nothing to print. If you miss the call, we'll text you to find a better time.
